Whitby Boom Lift Operator Training - A cherry picker is a type of aerial work platform. Cherry pickers consist of a platform or bucket at the end of a hydraulic lifting system. The machine is also called a man lift, boom lift, basket crane or hydraladder.

The bucket of platform is occasionally set onto or mounted to a truck or other motor vehicle and is sometimes known as a bucket truck. Other motor vehicles that can be used are self-moving platform, stand-alone trailers or flat back pickup vans. The person working stands and begins working inside the bucket. The individual inside the bucket often has an upper set of controls allowing control of the position of the bucket. The reach of the bucket can be lengthened on several models by telescoping to adjust the lifting arm. Automatic safety controls prevent tipping. Articulated boom lifts are recommended when it is necessary to clear obstacles or for working in tight areas.

Cherry pickers, as the name suggests, were originally constructed for picking fruit at high levels in trees. These devices are usually used in various industries like for instance mining, exterior painting and construction. At times they are used for cleaning windows on high rise. The devices are used to service cable television, electrical equipment and telephone on utility poles. At times, firefighters use cherry pickers, referred to as snorkels, when ladders are inadequate. At Christmas time, civic workers could be seen hanging lights and banners in cherry pickers.

Suggested training standards for safety awareness are set by local regulations. Program consists of safe operation procedures through a combination of hands-on and classroom components.

Sessions comprise the following topics: current regulation and applicable concerns; general equipment safety considerations; fall protection; features of boom lifts, scissor-lifts and various stationary work platforms.

The responsibilities of the lift operator are covered, including the following topics: function test procedure; workplace inspections; avoiding and knowing dangers; equipment manufacturer's instructions and pre-operation check procedures.
